CEO of Ghana National Ambulance Service clarifies circumstances surrounding Kotoko fan's death
Professor Ahmed Nuhu Zakariah, the CEO of National Ambulance Service has addressed the controversy surrounding the tragic death of a Kotoko fan, urging the public to understand the facts and avoid unnecessary sensationalism.
What Really Happened?
Videos circulating online sparked outrage, with many questioning why an ambulance driver was not present during the critical moment. However, the CEO on JoyFm, explained that the situation was more complex than what was captured in the footage.
During the riot at the stadium, multiple people sustained serious injuries. The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) on duty had to respond to several casualties simultaneously.
The team was following standard protocol—coordinating with event organizers and prioritizing urgent medical cases.
One crucial detail the CEO emphasized is that ambulance drivers are also trained EMTs. In mass casualty situations like this, the entire crew, including the driver, is required to provide hands-on care instead of merely waiting in the ambulance.
Why Was the Ambulance Unattended?
According to Professor Ahmed Nuhu Zakariah, in an ideal scenario, at least one EMT would remain in the ambulance while others respond to emergencies. However, this situation was far from normal. The overwhelming number of injuries required all available medical personnel to assist on the ground.
"The EMTs were actively treating casualties when the Kotoko fan needed assistance. Once they stabilized other patients, they quickly turned their attention to him," the CEO clarified.
Addressing Public Concerns
There was confusion about whether the ambulance crew abandoned their duty, but the CEO assured the public that they acted according to their training and medical protocols.
"The EMTs were the ones who eventually carried the patient to the hospital. While it was not in the ideal setting inside the ambulance, they ensured he received the necessary medical attention," he stated.
Moving Forward
The incident highlights the importance of proper medical coverage at large events and ensuring enough personnel are on standby to handle unexpected emergencies.
The CEO urged Ghanaians to avoid jumping to conclusions based on incomplete information and to trust that the National Ambulance Service is committed to saving lives.
"This matter should be put to rest. Our EMTs did everything they could under difficult circumstances. We will continue to improve emergency response at public events, but we need the public's understanding and cooperation," he concluded.
